Are Indoor Fountains Hard to Maintain?

The honest answer (and why it’s easier than you think)

The quick answer is NO. Here is what fountain maintenance actually looks like.

In practice, maintaining an indoor fountain comes down to three small habits:

  • Keeping the water level consistent
  • Occasional rinsing
  • The rare deeper clean

That’s it. No complicated systems. No constant attention.

Daily Life: Almost Nothing

Most days, your only interaction, beyond enjoying the fountain, is noticing the water level.  If it drops more than you like, you add a bit more. It’s less of a task and more of a rhythm—like watering a plant.

 Weekly or Occasional Care
Depending on your water and environment:

  • A quick rinse every 2 weeks keeps things fresh
  • Wiping surfaces prevents mineral buildup
  • Pumps are simple and durable, requiring little care.
(Even without these actions the fountain will maintain a pleasing appearance and perfect functionality for months.)

For handmade ceramic fountains, this process is especially straightforward. The materials are stable, non-reactive, and easy to clean.  And, unlike fountains made of resins, they don’t generate biofilm (slime).
If you have particularly hard water, a solution of 1 tbs. salt to 1 cup white vinegar will clean the mineral deposits off completely but even with hard water, that will not be frequent.

What You Might  Worry About (That Rarely Happens)

“Will it get dirty quickly?”

Not if you replenish the water as needed and give it occasional, light care.

“Is the pump complicated?”

No. The pumps we use have two moving parts; the impeller which moves the water, and the regulator. You set this to the flow you want once. It controls how much water is being moved. Neither require any mantenance beyond simple, occaisional cleaning.

“Will it take a lot of time?”

In reality, just a few minutes here and there.

Why It Feels Easier Than Expected

Once a fountain becomes part of your space, maintenance stops feeling like maintenance. It becomes part of the experience of owning it. A small interaction that keeps the water moving—and the space feeling alive.

A Different Way to Think About It

We rarely ask if a lamp is “hard to maintain.” A fountain isn’t much different. It’s something you live with. Not something you manage.

A Final Thought: If you’re hesitating because of upkeep, you’re not alone. But in practice, an indoor fountain is one of the simplest, most quietly rewarding additions you can make to a space.
